The tradition of the St. Martin’s Day goose feast is linked to Saint Martin, a bishop whose feast day is celebrated on 11 November. According to legend, Martin humbly tried to hide from those who wanted to make him a bishop, but the geese gave away his hiding place with their honking.
The custom is also associated with the end of the autumn agricultural season. At this time of year, landowners settled accounts with their shepherds, while young geese were prepared for the festive table. Goose dishes were traditionally accompanied by new wine, and an old saying goes: “Those who do not eat goose on St. Martin’s Day will go hungry throughout the year.”
To this day, this tradition remains one of the most beloved gastronomic celebrations of November.
