About
The Csíki Székely Museum’s newest temporary exhibition commemorates the visual artist András Márkos, born 75 years ago and who passed away five years ago in Csíksomlyó.
András Márkos was born in 1950 in Csíksomlyó, where he also completed primary school, graduating in 1969 from the predecessor of today’s Márton Áron High School. Between 1969 and 1973 he studied at the Ion Andreescu Academy of Fine Arts in Cluj-Napoca. After obtaining his degree, he worked at the Harghita County Artisans’ Association, and from 1975 he became an employee of the former Harghita County Museum, responsible for managing and restoring ecclesiastical art collections.
From 1978, he worked as a stage designer at the Hungarian State Theatre in Sfântu Gheorghe. Alongside his artistic career as a painter and graphic artist, he gained recognition at several solo exhibitions in Romania and abroad. In 1980, he was awarded a two-year scholarship by the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. He did not return afterwards but emigrated to West Germany, changed artistic direction, and became internationally recognised as a representative of abstract expressionism. His art flourished both there and in many countries worldwide.
During the retrospective exhibition, the museum will also publish a detailed catalogue of his life and career written by art critic Ferenc Székedi.
Although his works are held in major museums around the world, Márkos’s art is less known in his homeland. The museum now aims to fill this gap. He passed away in 2020 in Brașov, at the age of 70.
